In this morning’s Short Read of the Week we considered six articles (shown here) and came close to having a three-way tie for first place. But by a slim margin, our top choice was this very interesting article in The Atlantic about attitudes, strategies, and conflicts within the Oregon GOP. It makes clear that Republicans in our state have become too extreme for a large portion of our electorate, which may influence our own attitudes and strategies:

Our second-place choice also came from a national news source, but had a local focus. Nicholas Kristof’s article about a long-time friend who was homeless on the streets of McMinnville is compassionate, honest about the damaging effects of some of the policies we as Democrats have promoted, and hopeful in its realistic suggestions of ways we might begin to turn things around:
